Shipley & Halmos Resort Lands At Barneys

Hard as it may be to believe that the holidays are right around the corner, it’s even harder to believe that Fall ‘09 clothes are already being supplanted at stores by Resort deliveries. (When was fall? Is it over?) Anyway, believe it. Shoppers starting their yearly snoop for presents and party frocks will find a whole new crop of goods arriving in stores this week and next. Today, for example, the first-ever Shipley & Halmos Resort collection arrives on the racks at Barneys New York. The retailer picked up the capsule collection on the basis of sketches—an unusual business practice, these days—and is selling it exclusively. A cross section of categories is represented, e.g., a twill car coat, a couple of georgette blouses, an oversize cotton shirtdress. But given the season, the Shipley & Halmos item shoppers are most likely to flock to Barneys for is the Bronte dress, a silk crepe number in a black, white, and gray floral print that has “New Year’s” written all over it.

All That Glitters Is Victoria’s Secret

The gates of Heaven, as it were, are guarded by three PR checkpoints and one drug-sniffing dog. Those are the hoops you’ve got to leap through to get to the Angels—the Victoria’s Secret Angels, at least—who I met yesterday as they sat in their 30 makeup chairs, preparing for the HD-filmed, soon-to-be-televised Victoria’s Secret runway spectacular. (Street style photog Tommy Ton was backstage, too; click to see his exclusive pictures.)

The show, says stylist Charlotte Stockdale, is huge. “For a normal fashion show you turn up ten days before,” she says. “In this one, I do about 30 days. Then you get here and you think, ‘It’s under control.’ And then two days before the show, wings are added, dancers are added, fliers are added, and suddenly you’re, like, ‘Oh my God, it’s not under control at all.’ ” But as it turned out, it was. More than one performer took flight during the 45-minute extravaganza, which was run twice last night for the benefit of the cameras. An enormous inflatable pink puppy sprang to life and was deflated just as quickly. There was the acrobatic troupe, the show choir, and, oh yes, the Black Eyed Peas. All in all, there were more pyrotechnics than a night at the opera. No wonder Jay-Z, sitting front-row, opted for a tux.

And the clothes (or lack thereof)? You won’t find the showpieces stocked at your mall in the coming months, but that’s never been the point, anyway. The trains, shoulder straps, wings, and appendages ran the gamut from a geometric metal polygon sported by Liu Wen, VS’s first Asian model since 2003, to a lavishly feathered pair of swallow’s wings worn by Abbey Lee (Stockdale called them couture). Where these girls go—and shimmy, strut, and booty-shake—balloons, billows, and cloaks trail behind. Almost every trend of the past few years was paid its tribute. There were bits that felt like Sprouse, like Vuitton, like Balmain. There was neon, disco, psychedelia, Americana, comic-strip fantasy, and storybook fantasy. Unreality was the rule. Heidi Klum hit the spangled runway five weeks after giving birth. Even with her stomach covered, that seemed unreal, too.

It was a little hard to focus your eyes on normal people and normal clothing when the lights finally went up. The evening’s theme, I learned afterward, was Magical Journeys. Sounds about right. It was a trip.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show airs December 1 on CBS.

Russia : SIBUR opens new unit for flat geogrids under Plastik - Textile News Russia

A ceremonial launch of a new unit for flat geogrid production under the trade mark Apropat took place at Plastik plant, a subsidiary enterprise of SIBUR. The design capacity of the unit is 3 kta.

According to current forecasts of the market conditions, when the design capacity of flat geogrid production is attained, the annual earnings of the enterprise will increase by 550 million RUR.

Employees of the plant have been retrained for operation of the new equipment concurrent to installation of the geogrid production lines.

The similar geogrid production unit with 3 kta capacity was commissioned in August 2009 at Orton, another enterprise of SIBUR in the Kemerovo Region.

Furthermore, in 2010 Orton and Plastik are planning to start production of polypropylene nonwoven geomaterials which are also used in road, oil-and-gas and industrial-and-civil construction. The total capacity of the lines that have been bought by now from O.R.V. Manufacturing S.p.A., Italy, will be up to 18.2 kta of nonwoven geomaterials.

Start of the new lines at both enterprises will enable SIBUR to increase its market share in Russian production output of geosynthetic materials up to 20%. Due to commissioning of the new units for production of geogrids and nonwoven geomaterials earnings of Plastik may increase by 2012 by 1.1 billion RUR.

The final processing of plastics is intended, among other things, to stimulate the demand for products made of polypropylene, production of which will multiply due to commissioning of new capacities by the company in the coming years.

Geosynthetic materials are used during construction and reconstruction of roads and railways, earthwork, laying of pipelines, and field and mine infrastructure development. In particular, use of geotextiles and geogrids with high breaking load characteristics enables strengthening of road pavement due to separation and reinforcement of fill layers, uniform distribution of pressure upon the base, and improvement of water drainage conditions. Use of geosynthetics provides significant cost cutting for builders.

These materials are in short supply in Russia, and the considerable part of them is imported. Up to now nonwoven materials have been manufactured by SIBUR in the amount of up to 3 thousand tons at the enterprise of Sibur-Geotekstil LLC in Surgut.

In May 2009 SIBUR concluded with JSC Korporatsia Ural Promyshlenny - Ural Polyarny an agreement on cooperation during implementation of investment projects in the Urals Federal District. In particular, the Corporation will finance preparing design and estimate documentation and will promote financial borrowing from the RF Investment Fund for designing and construction of the Salekhard - Nadym railway line. During the construction work the Corporation will actively promote attraction of domestic suppliers of equipment and materials, quality of which corresponds to foreign counterparts.

INDEPTH: HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON
A snapshot of a life
CBC News Online | August 4, 2004

He preferred black-and-white to colour film, snapped poses of the rich and famous, and never used a flash. He also didn't want to be photographed himself. Henri Cartier-Bresson was a legendary photographer whose style was often described as a marriage of contrast.

He won accolades from peers and from U.S. master photographer Richard Avedon who described Cartier-Bresson as the Tolstoy of photography.

His rule was to keep things simple: Cartier-Bresson believed a good photograph "came to the camera" and not vice-versa. He strived to capture what he referred to as "decisive moments" – those instants when the core of a person or event is exposed and everything else melts into the background.

Aug. 22, 1908:
Henri Cartier-Bresson is born in Chanteloup, near Paris, France.

1931:
As a young art student, Cartier-Bresson leaves France for a year-long trip to the Ivory Coast. He takes up photography upon his return.

1934:
Goes to Mexico on an anthropological expedition.

1935:
Studies filmmaking in the United States.

1936:
Becomes an assistant to film director Jean Renoir for his pre-war films "La Règle du Jeu" and "Partie de Campagne."

1937:
Makes a documentary on the Spanish Civil War, Victoire de la Vie.

1940:
Cartier-Bresson is taken prisoner by Germans shortly after the start of the Second World War.

February 1943:
After two attempts, Cartier-Bresson escapes from a German prison camp and joins an underground movement to help others escape.

1944:
Joins a photography group to document the liberation of France. Directs Le Retour, a documentary on the repatriation of French prisoners of war.

1945:
Rumours of Cartier-Bresson's death reach the U.S. and the Museum of Modern Art begins to prepare a posthumous showing of his work. Cartier-Bresson would later go to New York to help finish the show.

1947:
Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, David Seymour and George Rodger found the Magnum photographic co-operative.

1947-1950:
Travels throughout Asia, documenting the death of Gandhi in India, the establishment of the People's Republic of China and the independence of Indonesia.

1952:
Publishes Images à la Sauvette, also known by its English title The Decisive Moment, believed to be his definitive work.

1954:
Cartier-Bresson is the first Western photographer permitted into the Soviet Union following the death of Joseph Stalin.

1966:
Leaves Magnum, but continues to take pictures.

1974:
Abandons the camera to focus on his first love, drawing.

Aug. 3, 2004:
Cartier-Bresson dies at age 95.
